…let me introduce you!
Matilda Ibini is a bionic playwright, screenwriter and occasional facilitator from London, and she’s a wheelchair user. She writes for stage, TV, film and radio.
Her work has been staged at the Old Vic Theatre, Bush Theatre, Hampstead Theatre Downstairs, National Theatre Shed, St James Theatre, Royal Exchange Manchester, Birmingham Rep, Soho Theatre, Arcola Theatre, Bunker Theatre, Hackney Showroom and Vaults Festival.
In 2020 alone her projects include:
'Hey Kid' -- a short film commissioned by Bush Theatre, as part of 'The Protest' - six short dramatized pieces expressing their reaction to the killing of George Floyd and its aftermath.
‘The Unexpected Expert’ -- an episode ‘Unprecedented’ a TV series written and filmed in lockdown. Watch it now on BBC iPlayer.
‘Notes to the Forgotten She-Wolves’ -- a performance of 20 short pieces presented by the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse, in honour of history’s forgotten and mis-remembered women and non-binary people
‘WHERE DO WE GO NEXT?’ -- a film project featuring six new short films from underrepresented writers. Watch Matilda's film here.
Matilda was awarded a scholarship from BAFTA and Warner Brothers to study a Masters in Playwriting & Screenwriting at City University.
Her debut play ‘Muscovado’ about slavery and the sugar trade was produced by BurntOut Theatre, toured the UK and co-won the Alfred Fagon Audience Award.
Her next play 'Little Miss Burden' was premiered at the Bunker Theatre and was a finalist for an OffWestEnd Award for Best New Play. Buy the playtext here.
