Dying to be an artist right now!
…Or creating in the face of despair
I had a realisation recently.
I'd been rejected from a competition I'd applied to, where the winner would have had their one-person show turned into a Netflix special. What a dream! I'd love to do that with 'The Ex-Boyfriend Yard Sale.' I was feeling bummed.
A couple nights before that, I launched into a comedy routine at midnight when my partner was trying to sleep.
And while my teaching has been filling me up, making me feel useful, and working on my book has been engrossing and challenging, it hit me ...
I am DYING to get back on stage.
My actor self chomping is at the bit, yearning to flex performative muscles.
My desire to be on stage is amplified by the mounting impediments and uncertainty. To keep myself from slipping into despair, I know the antidote for is CREATING. Making art. Digging into projects.
Thankfully, I have some deadlines to deal with right now to keep me engaged in making art -- chiefly, more edits on my book!
I have a few ideas about how I'm going find an outlet for my actor self and I'll keep you posted once I have a clearer plan.
For now, if you too are desperate to put your artist self in the driver's seat, I want to encourage you to CREATE.
Don't stop being an artist. Pivot and stay engaged.
If you'd like some support to do this, my Creative Quarantine Challenge might be of use to you.
First launched in March 2020, over 14 days you'll get a daily email from me with a creative task. You can spend 10-60 mins on the tasks.
Blast away any proverbial cobwebs. Return to the joy of creating.
Feel like an artist again.
