I asked Amina some questions!

HALEY: How do you describe your work?
AMINA: I spend my days actively planting myself where I deserve to be seen as a visible, Black, Muslim Woman: in the creative arts, theatre, screen, airwaves and through writing. I strive for Muslim characters to be complex, well rounded and integrated in the worlds that they reside, rather than novelty.
HALEY: What’s your artistic mission?
AMINA: My mission is to present truthful realities of my community that I see and engage in everyday.
HALEY: What are 1-3 of your favourite projects that you’ve worked on so far?
AMINA: 'Start', devised and performed by the REP Company at Theatre Peckham. Directed by Toby Clarke. This was a time of professional growth; training and working alongside amazing, talented people that I consider dear friends. Toby's ethos of ensemble and using devising as a primary tool, really gave me confidence in my talent and what I can bring to the table.
'My Name is My Own'Directed byJo TyabjiandTemitope Ajose-Cutting.
This was a multidisciplinary performance piece based on June Jordan's'Poem about my rights'.It was so empowering even though it's rooted in pain. It was really liberating to express anger on stage which, as a Black Muslim Woman, I'm socialised to restrain.
'Pericles'with Public Acts directed by Emily Lim. This was the production that inspired me to pursue acting as a career. Emily believes that theatre is for everyone and anyone can be on stage. She proved it with a huge 200+ company of non-pro actors that took centre stage on the Olivier at the national, and it was glorious. I felt that I had a place in the industry.
HALEY: What are you working on these days?
AMINA: The eternal cycle of training and auditioning.
HALEY: What artists do you look up to?
AMINA: Honestly, I'm really inspired by my peers. Their determination to upskill and improve daily to reach their dreams is so infectious, and how they go out of their way to support and celebrate each other as we're all in it together. It's a really encouraging environment.
You can listen to her narration of audio fiction 'A Little History of Things Lost and Found' which has just been released on Khoreo Magazine podcast & if you're a gamer you can help her escape Monstrum 2 by Junkfish Games.
