If you don't know... Valerie Ebuwa
… let me introduce you!
‘The inspiration is my life… a combination of wanting to fight for dancers, wanting to fight for artists and wanting people to understand how racism works.’ – Valerie Ebuwa, Dance Art Journal
Valerie Ebuwa is a freelance dance artist, activist, writer, mentor and model based in London. Most recently as a maker, she choreographed and created Body Data, a filmed dance piece that provides a fresh perspective on the naked, black, female form.
‘Body Data’ was meant to play at the V&A Museum for a week, but due to COVID-19 her performance and talk were postponed. Luckily for us, Val moved the project online (!!). Check out the full ‘Body Data’ film here. Via her Instagram, listen Val’s illuminating talk on the project, and read a great interview she gave about the project at Dance Art Journal.
As a writer Valerie contributes to I am Hip Hop magazine; a printed and online publication championing Hip Hop culture. She’s currently fundraising for #letsmakeshithappen, a project enabling inclusivity in the arts by funding for minority artists.
Go learn more about her work on her website and instagram @valerie_ebuwa.

As I work on my ally-ship & antiracism, I will regularly be sharing the work of independent BIPOC artists. As has been suggested to me by some of my Black and POC readers, I will be centring Black artists for the foreseeable future. If you are a BIPOC artist, or if you know BIPOC artists who you’d love me to bring to the attention of my audience, please email me with your/their names.
