How to Cultivate Longevity in the Arts

I'm going to jump right in and say something bold:

You cannot make good art and have longevity in your career without self-care.

I’m learning this the hard way.

I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease in July this year.  I’m going to be fine, but it’s made me stop and take stock.

I was running on adrenalin for a decade, pushing myself so hard I couldn’t see that I needed a break. I didn’t even realise I was stressed or that I was addicted to being busy.

I now believe you cannot make good art and have longevity in your career without self-care.

I’m talking self-care at the most base level. I’m talking, taking care of yourself, having your own back, taking responsibility for your health.  I’m talking:

Remember! You are a giant baby. Cover your bases.

What do I mean by this?

On those days (or weeks, or hell, months) when you wake up feeling panicked, anxious, consumed with doubt, hating all your projects or every human being, filled with a sense of futility or hopelessness or severely uninspired…

Before you chuck out your work, throw in the towel or berate yourself, STOP, breathe and ask:

Are my bases covered?

What are "the bases" ?!  Let me define them....

THE BASES FOR LONGEVITY IN THE ARTS

1st Base - SLEEP
How’s your sleep? Are you getting 8 hrs a night?

For those of you who say you’ll sleep when you’re dead, read this article or this book. Get your phone and computer OUT of your bedroom. Get blackout curtains. Consider how booze and caffeine may be affecting your sleep. Fellow insomniacs! When you can’t sleep, REST. Stay horizontal, watch a movie, read.

2nd Base - FOOD & WATER
What are you putting in your body, how and when?

Stay hydrated! Eat healthy food. Are you getting your greens in? Are you getting protein and healthy fats?  Are you eating in a relaxed manner, sitting down and chewing? Are you eating really late at night? Help your body out by nourishing it with food that sustains your energy and eating it slowly to aid with digestion.

3rd Base - MOVE YOUR BODY
Are you exercising?

Do what feels good for your bod. Go for a walk. Have sex. Go to the gym, a yoga class, run with your dog, sign up for intramurals. Sweating feels good and you’ll release endorphins which boost your mood. Exercise also helps with sleep!

Everything becomes easier when you’ve got those bases covered.

They all benefit each other, lowering your stress levels and calming your nervous system. Which means you’re better equipped to navigate challenging situations and make productive decisions.

IMHO covering your bases is also the most generous thing you can do for your colleagues and loved ones.  Your better mood, clear thinking and grounded vibes make you better company and more reliable.
